Directly after winning a championship for a local spring league, our Gu12 team headed up north to Davis in order to compete in the US Club Soccer National Cup West Regionals on June 20th through the 22nd. Although their first opponent, Sacramento United, came out and possessed the ball well, Coach Cisco Lopez and his Gu12 team obtained their first victory of the weekend on Saturday morning with a 4-1 win. On Sunday afternoon, the girls faced their next opponent, Diablo FC, where they secured their spot in the Championship game with a 1-0 victory.
On Monday afternoon the championship game was played against Lamorinda United. Lamorinda scored the first goal of the game early in the first half. Trailing by 1, Coach Cisco's team earned a corner kick that was placed into the box, where forward, Alexandra “Xuxi” Lopez, headed the ball over the keeper’s head. A panicked defender who was standing behind the keeper accidentally caught the ball, evidently, earning a penalty kick for the SLA Nomads team. Cassandra “Cassie” Lianto (center defender) stepped up to take the PK, where she accurately placed the ball into the left side net, tying the game 1-1. Soon after, a ball was kicked into the 18-yard box where a shot was taken, but the goalkeeper deflected it; however, this allowed Luisa Angon (center midfielder) to score off of the rebound, placing her team in a 2-1 lead before half time.
In the second half, forward, Haley Mookini, scored one more goal when she decided to take a shot outside of the 18-yard box that soared over the keeper’s head and into the net. Although their opponent was able to score one last goal in the second half as well, our Gu12 team walked away undefeated and victorious with a Championship title after their final 3-2 victory over Lamorinda.
Congratulations Coach Cisco Lopez and the Gu12 team on placing 1st in the West Regional Championship!
